Brief Summary Shadow’s Messenger by T.A. White

First off, this was a fun urban fantasy series – nothing new, but well written with an engaging MC and solid world building. I liked that the MC was plucky (stubborn) enough not to immediately fall head over heels for the first hot supernatural stud that snapped his fingers at her. Romance does develop as the series progresses, but it’s definitely slow burn and progresses naturally … well, supernaturally, naturally. I also enjoyed the wide variety of people that populated the world – the MC is an active-duty soldier who just returned from a deployment to Afghanistan when she’s bitten by vampire and wakes up in the morgue. As the story unfolds we learn of her background, dysfunctional family and strained friendships, largely originating from her decision to enlist and certainly not helped by her new fangy status, which she has to keep from them. As she delves into her new existence she meets all kinds of mythical folks, from werewolves to pixies, trolls to sorcerers and witches.If I had one minor issue with the whole series it’s that we’re constantly told that the baby vamp MC is so powerless, that vampires take at least a century to gain even a bit of oomph. While this was refreshing, reading about a character that didn’t immediately transform into a heavy hitting power player, it did strain belief that she always managed to survive her encounters with beings so much more powerful than herself, who often wished her harm.
