As an author, I know putting our struggles on the page can be a double-edged sword. It feels like therapy as we write it, but it wounds like machine gun fire when readers dislike it. OCD is a real thing, and I was immersed in Piper’s struggle with the disorder from the very first paragraph.I’ve read a few romances with gargoyles, and I like the Watcher universe and backstory Laine created for them in this book. And Gris was everything an 18-year-old guy on his first “job” should be. I suspected the guilty party, but Laine did a great job hiding the clues and cluttering up the plot with viable suspects so it wasn’t a clear-cut easily solvable case.The scenes where they share their wounds and embrace each other’s “darkness” were swoon-worthy and poignant. This is a story teenage girls will sigh over, and their mom’s would be smart to read it to, if for no other reason than to address the real problems of cutting, bullying and secret-keeping.
