Hidden Pictures isn’t a ghost story, it’s a scalpel that slices into our smug sense of self-satisfaction so deeply it hits bone. A perfect summer thriller complete with vengeful spirits, class warfare, and it even has pictures. What more could you want. I thought this book was so much fun. It’s not scary horror, but more of a ghost story. The drawings in the book add so much to the story and make a great addition (definitely do NOT want to do audiobook on this one). All characters are very likable, even the ones that are clearly hiding something. The twist at the end of the book got me, I did not see it coming! I knew the parents that this main character, Mallory, worked for were going to be shady at some point. But I was surprised to learn what exactly they were hiding.This book does have a completely pulled-together happy ending, and I liked that also. Some people who have read this made it their complaint – that things were too picture perfect in the end. But I have been switching between more extreme horror/trigger topics and something more this pace, and it’s nice to have a feel-good ending once in a while.

Brief Summary of the Book

The beginning of this book was superb. It starts with the narrator, Mallory, telling you how, a few years back, she volunteered as a research subject at a university. The ‘experiment’ was to stand in front of five male medical students blindfolded and indicate whenever she felt like they were looking at her breasts. Turns out Mallory gets a near-perfect score of 97%. So far, so intriguing. We then cut to a bit of backstory about Mallory’s drug addiction and her getting clean and then going on to work as a live-in nanny for a husband and wife and their five year old son Teddy. This is where the book starts sounding more like a YA novel than an adult novel. It descends quite quickly into the realms of the paranormal – but not in a spooky way. Teddy seems to be possessed by some spirit who’s trying to send a message via a series of increasingly detailed drawings. The drawings themselves were interesting but, in hindsight, felt a bit gimmicky. They didn’t really add anything to the story – it could have been told just the same without them. I began to feel that if an author is going to repeatedly use such a device, they really need to make it count. Do something clever with it, otherwise it just feels like an illustrated book – which this did.
