Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy. Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body. Then, Teddy’s artwork becomes increasingly sinister, and his stick figures quickly evolve into lifelike sketches well beyond the ability of any five-year-old. Mallory begins to wonder if these are glimpses of a long-unsolved murder, perhaps relayed by a supernatural force.

This book was a definite page-turner for me – I finished the first half in around two hours. I don’t get a lot of spare time to read with kids so it’s always nice when you don’t even realize you’ve read that much in a short amount of time. As the main character, Mallory was something I’d never come across before – a young, bright girl who should’ve been in college but addiction got the best of her because of a sports injury. I loved the bond that she created with Teddy, it all felt real and not forced.This was a book that I loved and didn’t love the ending, everything getting up to that point though was good. I wasn’t expecting Hidden Pictures to share quite a few similarities with a book I read two years ago which was disappointing. It wasn’t until the end that it became apparent how much they had in common. The other book wasn’t nearly as creepy and I liked the protagonist a lot less.
