Brief Summary Ascension by Nicholas Binge

The science in this was… plausible. If you’re not a PhD I don’t think you’ll quibble about it. He took the time to explain all of the discoveries in a way that made sense both to me and the narrative. With this trail of discoveries I was able to join in on trying to figure out what was going on, something that made the story that much more thrilling as my own guesswork was put to the test as the story went on.It wasn’t just this that made the story suspenseful to me, but the believable stakes of mountain climbing while the onset of madness and warped laws of nature confounded the characters. Some of the mountain climbing seemed to push the limits of what was possible, but I could accept it considering the ending. The characters, well, there was good and bad there. Several were mouthpieces to discuss philosophy, religion, and science. But I thought the main character was especially well-drawn if unlikeable. I didn’t like any of the characters very much, which did make it difficult at times. It is a testament to the mystery of the novel that I still wanted to press on to the end at such times.
