The book says that once you have arthritis you can buy medical insurance to pay for treatment. No, you can’t – it’s a pre-existing chronic condition.Many of of the medications discussed aren’t used in the UK. The healthcare ‘team’ the book advises you’ll receive from the NHS just doesn’t happen. It’s completely misleading.The book covers all imaging, except ultrasound. Ultrasound is the primary diagnostic imaging for RA, and other inflammatory arthritis, in the UK. Ultrasound is “Gold Standard” for NHS rheumatology, it’s preferred over all other imaging. It’s not used so much in North America, thus it’s not mentioned here.A large portion of the book is given over to self care in the form of homeopathy, herbs and vitamin & mineral supplements. Interesting if that’s where your interest lies, but these chapters are written in a very positive tone suggesting these remedies will work, but inconveniently there’s no proof just yet. If any of the remedies suggested take your fancy, Google them, as since book publication many have been disproved.The first couple of chapters are useful, especially the explanation of what inflammatory arthritis actually does, and how it damages things. Then the book just goes generic and light. It doesn’t mention the horrific side effects the meds can give, but it does recommend laughing, healing by prayer and watching TV.Daily living advice is silly. Just page fillers. They recommend using a wheelchair, hiring teenagers in the street to work for you, and asking a nearby stay-at-home parent to cook your daily meals.
