Told in third person primarily from Amelia’s point of view with an occasional chapter from Kyle, this story follows a newly divorced mom of two as she moves to a northern suburb of Houston called Timberland…ahem The Woodlands ahem, with her two kids who’ve been abandoned by their father. There are moments of levity and frustration as she ends up in a petty battle with the property manager assigned to their neighborhood over a Mother’s Day gift that she promised her children would have a home in their new front yard. I think anyone who has had experience with an overreaching HOA could relate to gnomegate or Game of Gnomes. I enjoyed the cultural references from children’s movies to the Avengers and pop music to classic rock. There’s also a bit of romance with a neighbor and the local HOA president who looks good in a bunny costume and jogging by on the street.
