The girls delight in their harmless hoodoo adventures until a tragic event involving the town’s racist sheriff promises to change their lives forever.

I was completely emerged in this world and with these characters. It takes place in 1899 in a small Louisiana Parish and follows 3 sisters over the course of a summer that changes their lives forever as they get to know their Aunt Teddy, who practices hoodoo, and learn the ways of Rootwork as they deal with the challenges of life in the Deep South at that time.Being a white girl from Ohio in 2022, I know nothing of that world but I can say that Tracy’s writing took me there. Her words leapt off the page and made me feel as if I were right there, in 1899 with Betty, Ann & Pee Wee. Her descriptions of the smells and the feel of the earth brought that world to life. The heartbreak that ensues in the story was written so unbelievably well and felt so real as I was reading it that I was brought to tears. I felt so much love for all of these characters (minus that sheriff) and was rooting for them every step of the way. I wanted to step into the book and grab them and hug them.
