This story is much in keeping with small towns during the wars. Each of the five older Barnes children is different. Jo runs the town library; the twin sons are just back from the war; Cymbeline is a force of nature and is determined to be the best at everything, while Fiona is a lovely musician.Another fascinating thread running through this story is how Flynn and Theo react to coming home after the war. Flynn is ready for another adventure, but Theo is lost in his grief about what he did during the war. His goal was to be a surgeon, but he couldn’t let Flynn go off to fight alone. Now that they are back, Theo suffers from killing people instead of saving them. Theo is compassionate.Thus, the author has set up the story for the next book about Theo, THE SCHOLAR. This is excellent reading.
