The Secrets We Keep is a story of endurance and resilience during World War II. It is a story that follows Marguerite as she leaves a bad domestic situation in England, to go to southern France only to be caught up in a worse situation there under Nazi occupation. She becomes an agent of the British, and along with suffering under the conditions imposed by the Nazis on the population, she is faced with fear and loss, mistrust and hurt as she strives to complete her assigned mission and in the process losing some of those close to her. A priest becomes her focus amidst the ever increasing violence and threats around her and confronting her. This is an extremely good novel, very descriptive of the horrors of war. War is horrible and this novel certainly reflects the realities of war.
