Before starting the reading or downloading, here is the summary of the book that you can read. France, 1918. In the final days of the First World War, a young Chinese woman, Pauline Deng, runs away from her uncle’s home in Paris to evade a marriage being arranged for her in Shanghai. To prevent the union, she needs the help of her cousin Theo, who is working as a translator for the Chinese Labour Corps in the French countryside. In the town of Noyelles-sur-Mer, Camille Roussel is planning her escape from an abusive marriage, and to end a love affair that can no longer continue. When Camille offers Pauline a room for her stay, the two women become friends. But it’s not long before Pauline uncovers a perilous secret that Camille has been hiding from her. As their dangerous situation escalates, the two women are forced to make a terrible decision that will bind them together for the rest of their lives.Set against the little-known history of the 140,000 Chinese workers brought to Europe as non-combatant labor during WWI, The Porcelain Moon is a tale of forbidden love, identity and belonging, and what we are willing to risk for freedom. The Porcelain Moon by Janie Chang PDF Download

Brief Summary The Porcelain Moon by Janie Chang

An engaging tale set during WWI. Pauline was brought to Paris by her uncle, along with her cousin Theo, to be the single servant of sorts at the family antique store but now that he’s planning to marry her off to someone back in China, a prospect that frightens her. Theo does not want to return to China either so he opts to enlist in the Chinese Labor Corps as a translator, which brings him into contact with Camille. Camille, the grand daughter of a duchess, is living in seriously reduced circumstances with an abusive husband and working at the local post office. Canny romance readers can guess what will happen when Camille and Theo meet but don’t turn away from this because there’s so much more. All of the characters (even the evil Mah) are well formed and realistic and the story telling is terrific. I’d not known about the role of Chinese laborers in WWI; don’t miss the afterword for more about this and other things). Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC.
