What bothers me is that the end doesn’t line up with the beginning. Or with the rest of it, really. There isn’t enough foreshadowing of the “answers” to justify how they are decisively dropped in your lap all wrapped up in a pretty bow. My head was spinning a bit when everything I had been reading changed, including the genre. “How… um… convenient” I thought, as it was all explained away with a quick bit of hasty explanation (from a diary, which had been an expository trope used all along, but changed drastically with a single entry). It wasn’t so much a clever twist as it was an expedient and hasty u-turn. And although other reviews have commented on the plot holes, it wasn’t the holes that bothered me as much as the contrivances. I couldn’t have been more surprised if suddenly UFOs landed in Scotland and little green ETs came to the characters to tell them it was all happening because of interstellar politics.
