For short-lived ‘quick’ races like humans, space is dominated by the complicated, grandiose Mercatoria, whose rule is both military and religious. To the Dwellers who may live billions of years, the galaxy consists of their gas-giant planets – the rest is debris. Our human hero, Fassin Taak, is a Slow Seer privileged to work with the Dwellers of the gas-giant Nasqueron in his home system Ulubis. His work consists of rummaging for data in their vast, disorganised memories and libraries. Unfortunately, without knowing it, he’s come close to an ancient secret of unimaginable importance.

That’s the premise for Bank’s latest. It’s not a Culture novel, although I suppose it could be linked to the Culture universe. In this novel AI’s are feared, loathed creatures, hunted down by an arm of the quasi-religious government. Perhaps for good reasons. But even if this isn’t a Culture novel, it certainly has the tone of one. Almost from the start things go wrong, and there are long, seemingly futile chases after what may be the wrong target. No one and nothing is exactly what it seems, and at the end even victory seems like ashes.There’s also a flavor of Dan Simmons’ Hyperion Cantos, especially the first two books. And shades of the search for Asimov’s Second Foundation. But Fassin Taak is as well-developed as any Banks’ protagonist, and those around him are exceptionally well-drawn characters. Perhaps because of the different milieu, the plot is much less morally ambiguous than the Culture novels. There is no question here about who the bad guy is, although he may have been as manipulated and ill-used as Taak.
