A somber and subdued novel, Inversions takes great pains to distance itself from operatic bombast and sheer space-luxury-communism craziness of previous Culture books. The action takes place on a distant planet stuck in the medieval times, and the presence and identities of Culture representatives are only implied – even if Culture fans will easily recognize them. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a Banks book and thus a great read, plus the author makes great use of the two narrative lines that not as much intertwine as they mirror and echo each other.It’s just.. well. It seems too much of Banks retreading familiar ground.
