Brief Summary Spindled by Shanna Swendson

I’m a huge fan of the Magic Inc series and the Rebel Mechanics series, so I know Swendson can do a great job with magic and practical-but-sweet romance. This was a pleasant bedtime read, clearly meant for the YA audience, but I think something about the fairy tale genre, the intent to target the young adult audience, or the combination of the two just didn’t give Swendson that creative space to shine like she usually does. It’s sort of a new take on one of the worst of the old-school Disney fairy tales, and I like that nobody’s a damsel, the betrothed prince is no hero, and the girls rescue each other and find love in more appropriate shapes, but it still feels a bit contrived. Maybe like it was written on spec to standards that allow for only so much spunkiness and nothing realistic. Don’t we owe our girls more than talking down to them like this? Honestly, I’d recommend her “adult” magical romances to teens and tweens much more really than this. (And they’re very PG-13 so it’s still appropriate.) This book feels a bit like the Once Upon A Time TV show, but even more constrained by Disney. (Which is difficult, given that OUAT was licensed by Disney.)
