He had lost his wife after his daughter was born and hadn’t wanted anyone in his life until she shows up. She doesn’t think she’s worthy of love after an accident that left her with a limp and scars. When these two meet everything changes. Throw in a sweet little girl and you have a interesting read that I read straight through.

Brief Summary of the Book

Rena is a young woman who has had unspeakable tragedies in her life which leads her to leave her home state of Texas and travel on her donkey to Oregon to live with her cousin. She is unconventional in her dressing as she wears pants, not dresses as all or most women do in this historical time piece. She gets as far as Denver and catches the train and rides where her donkey has to ride. Then in Baker City she gets off and rides her donkey the rest of the way. When she arrives, she is glad to see Theo’s home is next to water so she jumps in to bath and get the dust of the trail off of her. Her cousin is aware of her dress and it doesn’t bother him. She finds a package waiting for her from her cousin who is Theo’s sister. Oddly she finds a pretty pink pistol along with other goodies in the box. The note tells her the pink pistol was Annie Oak ley’s which makes Rena happy as she is such a fan. It says something like this pistol will bring you luck and if you marry you must pass it on to someone else. Marriage is not on her mind. No one would want her after her accident.
