Selena Montgomery is an extremely rewarding “discovery” as an author. I have now read several of her books in the Kindle format, and have found them both delightful and challenging. Her characterizations are authentic and the plot nuances intriguing. “Secrets and Lies” is set in a Latin American area where a “collector or artifacts” – some legitimately obtained and some not – is in possession of a diary and a document which suggests a “miracle tonic” originally discovered by an indigenous tribe but seemingly stolen in colonial days by a missionary priest. This is potentially a “gold mine” for modern pharmaceutical companies, who have sent Sebastian Caine to “acquire” it by whatever means possible. As the story begins, Sebastian finds that someone has been there before him, and his erstwhile friend, Felix Estrada, lies dying from knife wounds, only able to struggle to say something about “cat” before he dies. It turns out that he means Kat – his niece Dr. Katelyn Lyda, who is a botanist and has been tasked by her uncle with preserving the valuable documents and returning them to the tribe from which they were originally purloined. The remainder of the story chronicles the budding romance between Sebastian and Kat and their efforts to escape the “back-up squad” that has been sent to assure the pharmaceutical companies of the prize whose capture had originally supposedly been entrusted to Sebastian.
