I’m binge-reading Emma Scott’s books (Rush is #11), and I’m running out of superlatives to describe the extraordinary quality of her writing. I’ve read and reviewed dozens of forgettable books this year, but Emma’s powerful stories have earned a permanent place in my Kindle and in my heart. Rush–despite its self-pitying hero and incomplete ending–is another keeper.Here’s a bit of the plot. (WARNING: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!) Our hero (Noah Lake) lives for the adrenaline rush of extreme sports, risking serious injury and death while snowboarding, hang-gliding, rock climbing, and cliff diving in various locations around the world, describing his life-on-the-edge adventures in articles for Planet X magazine. His daring exploits garner worldwide fame until–feeling invincible–he dives from a high cliff in Acapulco, striking his head and upper back on jagged rocks in the ocean floor, leaving him badly injured and permanently blind.
