I remember discussing the cover of this book with the author before it was published. I had no idea who he was or what the book was about. I pre-ordered it (glad i did) but forgot about it for a long time. I saw it in my library and decided to read it. Didn’t want to put it down. Imagine my pleasant surprise, in the couple years that I had missed this book, there were tons of others added to the series. I LOVE it when I start a fantastic series and don’t have to wait for more of the story. So I’m sad but glad that this book got lost on my digital shelves for a while. Now I can binge!I think this book is a great opening gambit. The story line is interesting, the characters are real enough, I’m enjoying the different take on magic and beasties. It’s a little unpolished but that just gives it room to grow. The second book was even better. I’m only taking a quick break before starting the 3rd one to do a quick review so I don’t forget.The only thing that was a little tough for me (at first) was such a mature 19 year old, but hey, post cataclysmic times are different I’m sure. Just like times used to be much tougher and folks used to grow up faster. I surely wasn’t that on the ball at 19.
