I’ve read it twice. During my second reading I noticed messages that had gone over my head during my first. Every scene, every image, is meaningful. Chapter titles are the reader’s guide through this novel’s labyrinth of symbols easy to miss because they’re disguised in scenes and images so commonplace.Ultimately, this is a story about Stela and Fly. But Fly would not have existed if Gary had not found Ellie. And Fly could not have become Fly if Gary had not evolved into Gary after he ran off with Ellie. Stela could not have existed if Martin had not rescued Mermaid. And Mermaid had to meet Stela’s dad for Stela to become Stela. On their way to becoming Fly and Stela, Stela had to love Johann and question the validity of her love for him. Fly had to meet and reckon with Pastor John the Baptist and Suzanna. Stela had to live through Edi, Steven and Malaika.
