Sleepover_ brings out his ability to generate a sci-fi/mysterious cosmos world-render of staggering and captivating power. Not only can he conceive the worlds, he can consistently craft them such that Reynolds is one of only three fiction writers I expect to have a high “yeah, but he’s written SO many books–this one will be the one I regret putting everything aside for” expectation and then the remarkable delight of having that expectation overturned and made desolate. He is also a true artist with respect to the ‘fatal-puzzle’ type of work; a sub-genre of extraordinary impact when the author can carry off the conception without the typical physicalist-reductionist “you thought it was a preternatural beast but it really is only a fatuous hand-puppet of the psycho fundamentalist” failure of art.
