As the present story opens with Tom and Mika, it is February. About two years have passed since Tom’s divorce from Imogen. But like Duncan and Imogen’s story, there is a lot of history that comes into play first. For convenience, I’ve summarized the background below – with some added commentary. Note that some of Tom’s story is gleaned from his ex-wife Genny in book one; some is from this book. Bits of Corey Szabo’s story return in this book, beginning with Tom and Genny’s wedding about twenty-six years ago. Corey and Tom both love Genny, and Corey is fiercely protective of her. He knows Tom will break her heart, but Tom cannot see it. A few years later, Tom has a brief run-in with cult feminist icon Mika Stowe, a Yoko Ono-type figure. Here is where Tom sets into play his eventual betrayal of Genny. A little too infatuated for a married man, he chooses not to observe Mika’s rather bold show of interest in him – something his friends don’t miss. Mika admittedly sleeps with whom she wants, when she wants. She is clearly available to Tom despite knowing full well that he is a very married man.
