Brief Summary Locklands by Robert Jackson Bennett

To start, the book has some very unusual pacing with some very contrived-feeling plot elements. I get that most authors fancy themselves chessmasters advancing their characters around on the board in what seems like predictable ways to create traps for each other, but this author might be best served by learning the game a bit first lol. The first third of the book focuses on Tevanne establishing itself as this kind of monster character that has snowballed and taken over the vast majority of the rest of the world—slowly consuming (why?) the small pieces of human civilization that remain, leaving Giva, the new nation founded by Berenice and Sancia, who have done… well, a small amount, to piss it off basically as it has slowly formulated its plan. 8 years seems like a long time, and given Tevanne’s capabilities, it seems a bit incongruous that it took them this long to reach this point.
