It took me a minute to get on the Grimm’s War series on account of I’d pigeonholed Jeffery H. Haskell as a writer of superhero prose. His two series, Full Metal Superhero and Superhero by Night, are some of my favorite reads in the cape & cowl genre. However, if I wanted to keep on enjoying the guy’s writing, I knew I would have to dive into his non-superhero stuff. Stubborn me kept putting it off because “No, Haskell will write more stories about Arsenal and the Wraith, I just know it!” Except he hasn’t.The premise to Grimm’s War isn’t fresh or original. It draws on that old saw about the ragtag band of misfit soldiers in dire need of getting whipped into shape. If you’d read stuff like N.C. Reed’s Parno novels, Marc Alan Edelheit’s Stiger’s Tigers, or even Robert Asprin’s tongue-in-cheeked Phule’s Company, then you get the gist.
