Brief Summary Limited Wish by Mark Lawrence

One Word Kill captured lightning in a bottle, combining wonderful “coming of age” moments with 80’s nostalgia and maybe the best representation of D&D sessions I’ve read in a work of fiction. What made that book work so well wasn’t really the plot — which boiled down to its simplest components is really your commonplace time travel story — but the way in which the characters came to life, in particular the human moments Nick faces in dealing with his illness while simultaneously dealing with falling in love.Limited Wish sort of inverts that blueprint, with greater emphasis placed on the time-travel plot and trying to explain what is “really going on,” so to speak, with Future Nick(s) and his time travel exploits, than on the relationships among Nick and his friends and between Nick and Mia. It’s still great, but it suffers in the same way all time travel books/stories/movies do — time travel doesn’t really make a lot of sense when you think too hard about it. It also loses some of the magic from the first book by virtue of paying more attention to plot and less to the character relationships that made One Word Kill so special.
