I could not put this book down. After reading “Nothing to Envy” by Barbara Demick- I became even more intrigued by the country of North Korea and I felt drawn to Yeonmi’s story because I wanted to know more. I could not believe the traumas Yeonmi had to endure living in North Korea and trying to escape! Yeonmi is a gripping writer and her thoughts flow so naturally on the pages. I am so glad she was brave enough to tell her story. The U.S. has become so ignorant of places like North Korea and China. It is profoundly beneficial for Americans and other Western countries to be aware of these atrocities. It will not only shine a light on the darkness of North Korea, but may even(hopefully) provoke action to change the lives of the people. I sincerely hope that one day, North Korea’s people will be liberated from underneath the regime. Until then, thank you Yeonmi, for bringing awareness and making waves!

About Author

Yeonmi Park is a courageous and inspiring human rights activist, born in North Korea and the author of “While Time Remains: A North Korean Defector’s Search for Freedom in America.” She embarked on a harrowing journey to escape the oppressive regime, enduring hunger, poverty, and constant surveillance. In 2007, Park and her mother braved the treacherous Gobi Desert to find freedom in China, but faced new dangers, including human trafficking. They eventually made their way to South Korea and later to the United States. As a graduate of Columbia University, she now resides in New York City, where she continues to be a prominent advocate for human rights and a symbol of hope for those still suffering under oppressive regimes. Her memoir, “In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl’s Journey to Freedom,” published in 2015, captures the resilience of the human spirit and serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of freedom and human rights.
