The gist of the plot reminds me of a well-written modern television series with excellent acting, called “Da Vinci’s Inquest.” The program has recently appeared on public television here and takes place in Vancouver, British Colombia. Da Vinci portrays the County Coroner, who is responsible for determining the cause of death in numerous instances of “wrongful death,” or “foul play,” usually involving suspicious circumstances. There is a similar theme at work in the novel. It’s all fun and games until somebody gets injured or killed, you think. In both the novel and the television series, the leading protagonists bring the right attitude to the job, in my opinion. They’re a practical sort of professionals, keenly perceptive and positive-minded, with unswerving determination.
