Vance’s “Hillbilly Elegy”, so the parallels are not only to inner city life) (Makes me think we should a designated part of the library called TRAPPED KIDS THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN)The main character, Lex (Alexis), is as lovable as a stray puppy– your heart melts, but you wish she would stop growling, barking, snapping and eating everything in sight. But that is how young living beings are who grow up half starving, abused (verbally and physically) and without shelter. As a baby boomer I was impressed to see how all that legislation meant to help children over the years still isn’t enough because the problem always seems to come back to guardians who are mentally ill and/or addicted to alcohol/drugs and stop caring for their kids.
