” Denizen ” is a good book that you can read online or download to read it later. And always inescapably riveting. From the first page until the devastating final chapter it will grip you and not let you go, much like the inner demons haunting the protagonist. If this book has faults it didn’t matter to me as I found it a riveting and perfectly-paced page-turner, with just enough truths and hints drip-fed to keep me guessing and re-tweaking theories as to what had really happened. Of all Watson’s raft of skills, including piercing metaphors and economical truth-nailing, his greatest was the gradual build of an ominous dread that could have led in a few directions but none more horrifying than the one it finally took. The unreliable narrator device is always a challenge, as it was here, so I occasionally got side-tracked trying to integrate the lavender and some other recurring details into the plot arc, but not enough to detract from Watson’s grasp and representation of repressive psychosis and mental disorder and the nightmarish life it inflicts on its sufferers.
