Even the blurb gives too much away, as the mystery is laid brick by brick, and it takes a little while before we (and Willow) can figure out what exactly is so off about the people living on Clifford Island, let alone guess at what’s behind it all. Looking back, the bricks all fit together perfectly, even as the next one smacks the back of your head.In other words, there is a slowly mounting sense of paranoia that builds — sometimes second guessing itself — as well as occasional punctuating episodes of shocking horror (PG-13 at most though, I’d say) that of course relate to the overall mystery.Beyond being an enteraining thriller, I feel like this book is a deep meditation on loss… how we grieve when we lose something important, and how we deal with our fears about losing something important in the future. (Hopefully that’s vague enough as to not give anything away. The theme is set up very early on.)
