Lillian is the fresh, dynamic protagonist I’ve been craving from my historical fiction (though this book transcends the genre into other categories, and can definitely be qualified as a thriller, imo). Lillian commands the story on every page, and has so much intelligence and courage that I trusted her every move throughout the story. Though she’s certainly a flawed character in many ways, James does an incredible job to add small, tender moments that prove her true good nature (like quietly holding a man who had just been drafted until he cried himself to sleep). I found her overall the be super relatable, and a bit like Fleabag, in the best way.The side characters are fantastic too—even the ones who we spend a short time with are well drawn—and I specifically loved how smooth, unpredictable, and intriguing Dr. Ennis was.
