The Silence That Binds Us Book Review

” The Silence That Binds Us ” is a good book that you can read online or download to read it later. Before starting the reading or downloading, here is the summary of the book that you can read. Maybelline Chen isn’t the Chinese Taiwanese American daughter her mother expects her to be. May prefers hoodies over dresses and wants to become a writer. When asked, her mom can’t come up with one specific reason for why she’s proud of her only daughter. May’s beloved brother, Danny, on the other hand, has just been admitted to Princeton. But Danny secretly struggles with depression, and when he dies by suicide, May’s world is shattered. In the aftermath, racist accusations are hurled against May’s parents for putting too much “pressure” on him. May’s father tells her to keep her head down. Instead, May challenges these ugly stereotypes through her writing. Yet the consequences of speaking out run much deeper than anyone could foresee. Who gets to tell our stories, and who gets silenced? It’s up to May to take back the narrative. The Silence That Binds Us by Joanna Ho

Brief Summary The Silence That Binds Us by Joanna Ho

Joanna Ho’s The Silence that Binds Us is an incredible accomplishment on so many levels. I’m still processing the novel, because I was so blown away by it, but suffice to say I can’t hear “Lay Me Down” by Sam Smith without sobbing now. The story examines May’s struggle with loss, grief, anger and racism while navigating the challenges of understanding how to be an ally to her best friends. Ho writes high school in a realistic way with young characters who are complex and flawed. She also presents many facets of the AAPI community, not just a single story. As May fights against racist remarks made against the Asian Americans in her community, she also faces pushback from other Asian Americans. Ho presents Asian American parents who are multidimensional as well. Their grief and pain, their generational trauma and their love for their children come through rather than being flat stereotypes that “just don’t understand”.
