Some critic described this book as “Where the Crawdads Sing” meets “Station Eleven.” Well, this is pretty facile; they only have trite resemblances. Yes. The “Light Pirate” Wanda does live in the wetlands, and the world is facing a sort of apocalypse, climate change, but the resemblance ends there. Wanda is born during hurricane Wanda (thus her name) and her life becomes a kind of hurricane when she hooks up with her father leaves her with her mentor and neighbor to survive and make sense of this new world where global warming is drowning Florida.Some of the pacing is slow and seeping (puns intended) so the reader can gradually soak up change. The book is character-driven, but stick with it. You will find plenty of action. And…it’s not just a downer. This is by far Lily Brooks-Dalton’s best book.
