The Last of the Moon Girls is a masterpiece of a book. Barbara Davis has woven a tapestry of love, forgiveness, and redemption. The characters are richly detailed that I thought I would recognize them on the street. This is story of a powerful group of women with unusual gifts for healing, but in the town of Salem Creek, they are feared and hated, subject to every sort of defilement. The woman are labeled witches because of their gifts and the stigma stays with them through generations. And when two young girls are murdered in Salem Creek, the townspeople immediately decide that it was Althea Moon’s doing. At her grandmother’s death, Lizzy Moon comes back to Salem Creek from New York, to set matters straight if she can. Lizzy is the last in a long line of Moon girls, so she feels she needs to protect their legacy. It is a wonderful story that will keep you turning pages until the satisfying ending!
Brief Summary of the Book
Elzibeth (sic) finds out two months after the event that her grandmother has died. Of course she takes time off from her blossoming career in a perfume company (and the boss with whom she had an affair) to deal with the property she has inherited. Naturally, nothing goes to plan and she is thrown into a maelstrom of memories and emotional baggage. It progresses exactly as you would expect, complete with tragic past events, the hot guy who can’t do enough for her, the old retainer who conveniently does all the cooking, magical soap and herbal remedies, the difficult relationship with her mother, towns people that unjustly hate the family and corrupt people in power. Every cliché that could be shoehorned in there has been. It all progresses exactly as you would expect.. no surprises here.
