Brief Summary The Frozen Dead by Bernard Minier

The Frozen Dead is set in the Pyrenees Mountains of southern France. The author Bernard Minier has penned an excellent novel with a chilling narrative woven around characters with interesting and complex personalities. The story unfolds with the spectacular slaughter of a magnificent horse, which was owned by a globe trotting billionaire. The crime takes place near Saint-Martin-De-Commiges a small town in a high valley of the Pyrenees. Because of the gravitas of the horse’s owner, a top French cop, Martin Servaz, is summoned from the city of Toulouse and assigned to investigate the horse killing. Servas is a Latin quoting classical music loving urbanite who is the polar opposite to the local gendarmeries with whom he must collaborate for the criminal investigation. The Wargnier Psychiatric Institute, which is reserved for Europe’s most dangerous homicidal psychotics, is also in the same valley. Coincident with the murder of the horse is the arrival to the institute of a young Swiss psychologist, Dr. Dianne Berg, who is to undertake an internship under the guidance of the newly appointed and unorthodox director of the institute.
