Theo Cray and Jessica Blackwood investigate evidence of communication with aliens: real or a complex hoax, with adventures in the jungle and murder–attempted and successful– mixed in. This is not a book for everyone; it does depend upon some general understanding of science and technology. I am just science and math literate enough to follow the general sense of the premise and investigation, but not good enough to find any holes in the logic. (I would enjoy hearing a good evaluation from someone with a stronger background.) In addition to a plot that moves at a brisk pace, Mayne sprinkles little factoids into the narrative that add their own independent, if peripheral interest, and I find in them some compensation for what seemed like a rather quick finish. The book is well-steeped in scientific reasoning with much less attention given to the motivations of the actors so that the whys are less than satisfactory.
