This book starts out as an Agatha Christie-meets-Friday Night Lights murder mystery, then shifts a bit to more of a True Detective aesthetic, and then dives deep into Stephen King fantasy horror territory. It’s a quick read despite it’s length, filled with interesting characters and reflections on misogyny and homophobia in the rural Deep South. It’s not particularly groundbreaking in that respect (misogyny and homophobia in the deep south shouldn’t surprise anyone at this point), but that doesn’t detract from the fun and intrigue. The plot can sometimes be a bit confusing given how many characters there are, and the constant narrative shifting between the characters was distracting at times, not to mention a highly convenient plot device, but King relies on it often too, so it shouldn’t be anything new to readers of his or the myriad authors who espouse his style and genre.
