The Barrens Book Review

” The Barrens” is a good book that you can read online or download to read it later. Before starting the reading or downloading, here is the summary of the book that you can read. Two young women attending college decide to have a summer adventure canoeing the rapids-strewn Thelon River that runs 450 miles through the uninhabited Barren Lands of subarctic Canada. Holly made the trip once before with a group of skilled paddlers she trained with at camp, and she wants to share that experience with her friend and lover, Lee, believing it will draw them closer. But a week in, Holly, the risk-taker, falls while taking a selfie near the edge of a cliff. She is left injured and comatose, and soon dies. Their locator beacon for summoning rescue was smashed in Holly’s fall. It remains to Lee, the inexperienced paddler, to continue the grueling and dangerous trip alone, to save herself and return her lover’s body to civilization and Holly’s family. The Barrens by Kurt Johnson

Brief Summary The Barrens by Kurt Johnson

It’s so simple: two women and a river. But that’s what allows the authors to put layer after layer of life onto the characters and to the setting. By the time you’re done — and this is a refreshingly quick, but deep, read — you can’t stop thinking about it. I like books that are entertaining and engrossing, but I like books that have that and stay with you after you’re done much more. I finished The Barrens two weeks ago and I still can’t stop thinking about it, and I doubt I ever will. Most writers hate being compared to other writers, but I hope the Johnsons don’t mind me comparing their style to Hemingway’s. There’s no fluff, no puff, and no artsy-fartsy prose here. Just straight-ahead, unadorned, first-person storytelling. If you can read, you can follow. And if you’re like me, you won’t want to put it down.
