I found the pace to be a bit slow for most of the middle due to the feeling that we kept seeing very similar things over again. However, I did appreciate all the time spent getting to know each other more deeply and really forge that love connection. While it was not quite enemies, they definitely had a lot of early animosity over the way their night together had ended. Ayaan still had quite a bit of maturing to do, and he was getting there by later in the story. Overall, this was a cute romance read with an arranged marriage and early animosity that would have been even better if it had been shortened and more focused. This may appeal to people who like more detail and don’t mind a longer journey to love.

SUGAR, SPICE, AND CAN’T PLAY NICE features a cute premise about arranged marriages with a strong dose of animosity turning into love. Payal is designing a clothing line and has a one-night hookup with a friend of the family that she finds on an app, Ayaan. When she sees Ayaan getting a call from someone labeled “girlfriend” and knowing his player ways, she ends their tryst with some harsh words and plans to never look back – until her parents tell her about their failing business which could be saved by a strategic merger, which also requires her to marry the owner’s younger son, Ayaan. While she does not want her parents’ business to fail, Payal also has no interest in making this work with Ayaan, especially given the way things ended. However, for her family, she gives him a second chance. As Ayaan and Payal get to know each other as part of the arranged marriage, their feelings slowly begin to change.
