Witches are the OG in the paranormal genre, you can’t go wrong with a good witchy read. Harper Brooks Spelling Disaster is a standalone and a great witchy read that ticks a few boxes. Popular Guy/Nerdy Girl, eccentric bff, sisters, magic school, faking dating, and more. Yasmine, bless her heart, has spent most of her life in a bubble and in a lot of ways is so innocent. She is sweet, intelligent, and beautiful, and it comes across on the page. Yas never got the chance to live and while her life is less than stellar in some areas she makes use of the opportunity it’s given her. Yasmine, I could feel it with her excitement about new things and hopeful attitude. Big points because this story started in a library and for the mfc love of books. There is talk of a goddess, a secret line of witches which I would have loved to know more about. The mysterious entity that hide in the shadows gave that creepy element. The stuff with Yasmine’s coven and the slow reveal of what’s truly happened added to the mystery. Then right towards the end a few things were finally explained and a bunch of revelations came to light. Spelling Disaster was more of a lighter read with an inexperienced mfc who is starting to learn who she is and while there was a sweet romance Yasmine’s growth is who really took center stage. Plus, there was plenty of magic, a dash of witch history, drama, and suspense. I really liked Yasmine and Theo as a couple, they were the cutest. I’m picturing their HEA right now. Spelling Disaster was a very enjoyable read.

Brief Summary of the Book

Yasmine is the daughter of a magical librarian, and has been trained her whole life to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Although she just turned 21, she’s been extremely sheltered; she’s been schooled & trained at home and kept away from the human world. Her mother is strict and demanding, leaving Yas little time to herself outside the magical training. Yas doesn’t really understand what’s supposed to happen to her during her ascension ceremony to be held on her 21st birthday, and no one will explain it to her. Understandably, this causes Yas a great deal of concern and anxiety. When something strange happens in the library shortly before her ceremony, no one will listen to her desperate pleas and questions. The ceremony ends up going horribly wrong, and the magical library burns down. Everyone blames Yas for what happened, including her own mom. As punishment, she’s sent away to the Andora Academy of Witchcraft, tasked with learning to control her powers.
