That carried me through the first two thirds of the book easily, but as we got to the last third/quarter of it, things kinda started going off the rails for me. Not so much for Keyne (central transgender character), but more in terms of pacing, certain character choices, how the magic went from somewhat background to painfully foreground with few limits, and how a ‘twist’ character remained waiting to pull the ‘twist’ for far too long.I loved most of the book, and I loved the representation in it, but to see a well-crafted situation and world come stuttering to a sudden stop because of the odd, not-quite-right shift in pacing, as well as magic suddenly doing FAR more than it had been shown to do before against an enemy that seems to quite literally drain it…as well as the things done involving one of the sisters…
