Brief Summary Rise of the Witch by C. Rochelle

The smut is hotter than 90% of the stuff on here and the lore was interesting but it drags a lot. My biggest quibble is that the time spent learning about the characters while they do nothing stalls the plot when we could be learning about the characters while they’re doing plot relevant stuff! You’ve got BAMF soldiers and a centuries old witch facing…a plague? An off screen evil military group? A god? IDK but the lack of character objective and the lack of active characters hurt the story. I’m going to read the second and third eventually but I’ve got a hunch they all could have been combined into 2 books if the time the characters fell in love while they were engaging with other parts of the plot.The result of them not doing things that move the plot along for a good chunk of the book is that you’ve got a seance and a conflict with a literal god stuffed into the last ~10 chapters of the book. I was following the lore fairly well before then but because so much was crammed into the end of the book it got confusing.
