I don’t want to give anything away. It is well written and it builds its case well. However it relies on some level of speculation on negative information such as “there is no evidence that Sickert wasn’t in that location at that time.” As a historian, I realize that we often base our conclusions on what was generally going on and if we cannot prove the negative, we do take that into consideration. However, when trying to piece together a conclusion about criminal activity, it requires a bit more of a leap of faith. I have to take the author’s word for the impressions of the her subject. In this case though, she readily admits she had a bad feeling about Sickert from the get go. In great part, his art seemed to impact her negatively. But the nature of post impressionist art tends to make the images less than clear. Also, what may seem very macabre to us may not have seemed so at the time. I don’t want to get into art criticism here so I will let that part be.
Brief Summary of the Book
Vain and charismatic Walter Sickert made a name for himself as a painter in Victorian London. But the ghoulish nature of his art—as well as extensive evidence—points to another name, one that’s left its bloody mark on the pages of history: Jack the Ripper. Cornwell has collected never-before-seen archival material—including a rare mortuary photo, personal correspondence and a will with a mysterious autopsy clause—and applied cutting-edge forensic science to open an old crime to new scrutiny.
