During this long, hot summer, I discovered Kristan Higgins and have read five titles so far, including this one. When you read so many books by one author close together, you can’t help but notice the themes / names / other devices she uses over and over. For this author, the themes are pregnancy and divorce, not necessarily in that order, in addition to childhood abandonment and resulting traumas. Perhaps as a result of all of these enormously emotional themes, her characters seem always to be crying, sobbing, choking back the tears that constantly fill their eyes, run down their faces, and her favorite, “leak into their hair.” The crying is so prevalent that I fear the characters must be dehydrated! The continual tears have now struck me funny, which I’m sure the author did not intend, and I find myself looking for the next tearful incident on every page.
