“Layla” is a good book that you can read online or download to read it later. When Leeds meets Layla, he’s convinced he’ll spend the rest of his life with her―until an unexpected attack leaves Layla fighting for her life. After weeks in the hospital, Layla recovers physically, but the emotional and mental scarring has altered the woman Leeds fell in love with. In order to put their relationship back on track, Leeds whisks Layla away to the bed-and-breakfast where they first met.Once they arrive, Layla’s behavior takes a bizarre turn. And that’s just one of many inexplicable occurrences. Feeling distant from Layla, Leeds soon finds solace in Willow―another guest of the B&B with whom he forms a connection through their shared concerns. Ghost stories require a certain panache to make them work. There are a number of ways to draw a reader in: plunge them in to the supernatural, gradually build the feeling of unease and the uncanny, or start with a sceptic who actively does not believe in ghosts or spirits floating about (without or between bodies). Leyla uses the second two devices, but kicks off as a love story that goes violently wrong. This is skilfully handled throughout. As suggested, either you let the story tell itself and accept the book on its own terms, or you reject the concepts and stop reading.My only criticism is that it becomes a bit self-indulgent and repetitious in places, though this is often to create the illusion of the passage of time. Other devices for that should be explored.
