I noticed this book ages ago and mentally consigned it to my “read later” pile. Later was two days ago when I felt in the mood for a cosy romance in an idyllic setting. Bookshops are a great setting for stories and I loved stepping through the door of Nightingale Books and meeting all the people who worked there and the customers who visited the shop. Gradually, you find out a little about them and you want to know more, until you become desperate to find out what happens to them. It is a charming tale which deals gently with the traumas that affect most of us at some time in our lives, it may not reflect real life for the majority of us, but if you want real life, buy non-fiction! On the down side, although I loved all the characters, with the exception of Hugh, I felt they had few layers, as though their stories would be fully explored in a later book. Then, before I noticed, it was nearly finished. I felt that the ending was a bit rushed, a mad dash to tie up everyone’s story by the last page. I suppose I didn’t want it to finish. Still, I loved the journey.
