In the classic epics, female characters are usually relegated to supporting characters. They may have significant agency and may even join in the battlefield action, but they are rarely fleshed out as individuals. They may speak (many do not), but they rarely have voices. Their inner thoughts, their character, and their personalities are generally left up to the reader’s interpretation.Not so in “Horses of Fire” – the familiar story of the Trojan War is reexamined not only from the Trojan perspective (which Virgil did first), but from the feminine one. Cowles and Shinson’s combined experience as military children and devotees of classical literature shines brightly – not only do the characters of Andromache, Rhea, and Helen ring true to their underdeveloped characters in the original poem, but their unique paths allow for an exploration of the shared-yet-diverse experiences of those who keep the home fires burning.I would give this book a 4.5 were it possible, as the writing was excellent and the wonderfully historically accurate (without be pedantic). However, the story does begin in medias res and presumes a significant amount of prior knowledge of character and story.
