I have been thinking about this book review since the 3rd chapter, when it became evident that I want everyone to read it, just so I can have someone to discuss it with. It is twisted, dark, hilarious, and unsettlingly accurate in its illustrations of the human need to survive that exists in every level of the “class” divide, while illuminating the stark contrast between those whose needs stem from poverty and those that come with privilege. The tricks the author weaves into the narrative are so ….intense. Her willingness to present to readers a cast of characters who’s choices make it impossible for them to be liked, was a risk well worth the taking. The lines between hero and villain that we have come to expect, are not only blurred but near non existent. I worry that the intense emotional response her characters evoke may cause some to give 4 stars, or abandon the book. I have to admit that the dark twisted turn contained within was almost to much to handle…while simultaneously making it impossible for me to stop reading.
