Starting from her recently canceled wedding and about to turn forty, Laurie Sassalyn returns to her Maine hometown of Calcasset to handle the estate of her great-aunt Dot, a spirited adventurer who lived to be ninety-three. Alongside boxes of Polaroids and pottery, a mysterious wooden duck shows up at the bottom of a cedar chest. Laurie’s curiosity is piqued, especially after she finds a love letter to the never-married Dot that ends with the line “And anyway, if you’re ever desperate, there are always ducks, darling.” Laurie is told that the duck has no financial value. But after it disappears under suspicious circumstances, she feels compelled to figure out why anyone would steal a wooden duck—and why Dot kept it hidden away in the first place. Brief Summary Flying Solo by Linda Holmes

After being a bit bummed about the author’s previous book being more women’s fiction than romance (totally my fault for not looking ahead of time, and just assuming), I went into this one thinking it would be more of the same and I was right. While I really did enjoy Evvie Drake Starts Over, I absolutely loved Flying Solo. This book pulled me in right away and kept my attention throughout. If I wasn’t sold enough on how fun Dot sounded, the mystery of the duck and cheering on Laurie and Nick I read this ““You know I don’t go places where I singlehandedly increase the Black population by more than ten percent,” and after absolutely laughing out loud at work I have decided it is going to be my new life motto. I adore that we were back in Calcasset, the friends and family (Nick’s grandma was amazing), and again I loved the mystery of the duck. As a single lady who’s almost 40 I felt like Laurie was relatable. Was a rooting for her to change everything about her for a man? Heck yeah! Nick was awesome (lol). I really loved that Nick and Laurie were high school sweethearts, and I love that they were able to connect again as adults.
