I really appreciate Priest’s sensitivity to marginalized people in this book. Finding a body part that is presumed to be male, Grady muses: “‘Could be a trans guy. He might have family that’s reported him missing under a dead name and the wrong gender.'” [p. 30] I wish I could be sure that our local police would be so aware of the possibilities! We have another rarity here, a fat character who is not looked upon with revulsion or pity. “He [Grady] guessed her to be in her sixties; she was both very attractive and gloriously fat.” [p. 174] As a fat person, I want to cry with joy when I read something like that.
